Holiday lights on a Garibaldi Highlands home

On the slopes of the Highlands, a lit roofline can be seen from halfway across town. Here's how we plan one.

Warm white holiday lights tracing the gables, eaves and garage roofline of a family home

This story describes a typical situation we see in Squamish, not one specific customer.

The situation

A family in the Garibaldi Highlands wanted their house lit up for the holidays: the main roofline facing the street, the garage, and a big cedar in the front yard. The house sits above the road, so the roofline is high and the front yard slopes steeply.

Last year's attempt involved a ladder on the slope, which nobody wanted to repeat.

Planning the design

We look at the house from the street, where it will actually be seen. On homes above the road, the upper roofline and peaks carry the display; lower details matter less.

We check outdoor outlets and plan which runs go where, so nothing overloads a single outlet.

How we install

  • Lights are attached using whichever method gives the cleanest, most secure result: purpose-made clips, fine staples or fasteners.
  • On the sloped yard, ladders are set with levellers and stand-offs, or the roofline is reached from the roof with fall protection where that's safer.
  • The cedar is wrapped from the trunk outward for even coverage, and timers switch everything on at dusk.
  • No roof work in icy or unsafe conditions.

After the season

Removal is booked when we install. We supply the lights and cut each strand to fit the rooflines and peaks, matching bulb style and colour to the house so it reads as one clean display from town. Customer-supplied lights aren't installed, and if a strand fails during the season, we come back and fix it.

Questions we hear

Can you light a big cedar?

Yes. Very tall trees can need extra equipment, which we confirm when quoting.

When should I book?

Early. The season is short, running from October through the holidays, and installation slots fill quickly. Booking in early fall gives you the widest choice of dates.
