The situation
A home on Blueberry Hill, above Alta Lake, has a steep roof with rows of snow guards and heat-trace cable running along the eaves and valleys. Needles and moss had built up behind the snow guards and in the valleys, and the owner noticed water staining on the soffit after the spring melt.
Another contractor had declined the job because of the hardware on the roof.
Why roof hardware matters
Snow guards hold snow on the roof so it doesn't slide off in one go. They also act like little dams for needles and moss, which collect behind each one.
Heat cables keep meltwater flowing at the eaves and valleys in winter. They can be damaged if pulled, stepped on or scraped.
How we approach it
- We plan the route across the roof before starting, so we're not stepping on cables or relying on snow guards for support. Fall protection is anchored independently.
- Debris is cleared by hand from behind each snow guard and from the valleys, working carefully around the cables.
- Moss is removed without pressure washing, and gutters are cleared at the end.
- If any cable or guard looks damaged or loose, we photograph it and let you know. Repairs are for a roofer or electrician.
Timing
Roof work in Whistler is a summer and early fall job. Clearing debris before winter gives the heat cables and gutters the best chance of working through the season.
