Moss on a shaded roof in The Glen
Pemberton may be drier than the coast, but a north-facing roof under big trees still stays damp long enough for moss to settle in.

This story describes a typical situation we see in Pemberton, not one specific customer.
The situation
A home in The Glen has a big backyard full of mature trees. The front of the roof gets sun and stays clean; the back slope is shaded most of the day and has patches of moss spreading out from the valleys.
The owner was surprised: they'd assumed moss was mainly a coastal problem.
Why moss grows here too
Pemberton's summers are typically drier than on the coast, but shade, falling needles and a long, cold winter still keep some roof slopes damp for months.
Moss starts where debris collects, in valleys and behind chimneys, then spreads across the shaded slope.
How we approach it
- We start with a look at the roof's condition and photograph anything a roofer should check.
- Moss is removed by hand from the shaded slope and valleys, then rinsed at low pressure. The sunny side gets a light clean if it needs one.
- Gutters are cleared at the end, since the debris goes there.
- A moss treatment follows, standard on asphalt shingles, to slow regrowth on the shaded slope.
What to expect
The shaded slope back to clean shingles, and a roof that dries out faster after rain. Trimming branches that overhang the roof, done by an arborist, also helps.
Questions we hear
Is moss really a problem in Pemberton?
On shaded roofs, yes. It holds moisture and lifts shingle edges, just like on the coast, though it often grows more slowly.
Do I need the whole roof cleaned?
Not always. We focus on the sections that need it and price accordingly.
