Roof valleys full of needles on a Lynn Valley home

The valley is where two roof slopes meet, and where every needle on the roof eventually ends up.

Asphalt shingle roof with moss and debris along the shingles

This story describes a typical situation we see in North Vancouver, not one specific customer.

The situation

A two-storey house in Lynn Valley has a roof with several valleys where the main roof meets a dormer and a garage. Looking down from an upstairs window, the owner could see long strips of brown needles packed into each valley, with green moss growing along the edges.

Water from heavy rain was spilling out of the gutter right where one valley drains into it.

Why valleys matter

Valleys carry more water than any other part of the roof. When they're packed with needles, water slows down and spreads sideways under the debris, keeping the shingles along the valley wet for days.

That damp strip is where moss gets started, and where roofers often find the first signs of wear on an older roof.

How we approach it

  • We clear each valley by hand from the top down, then the area where it meets the gutter, which is usually the worst spot.
  • Moss along the valley edges is removed carefully, without pressure washing the shingles.
  • Gutters below each valley are cleared and the downspouts flow-tested, because a cleared valley sends everything straight into them.
  • If the valley metal or shingles look damaged, we'll take a photo and let you know so a roofer can assess it.

How often

Homes under big conifers usually need valleys cleared once or twice a year. Doing it at the same visit as the gutters is the most efficient approach.

Questions we hear

Is valley debris really a problem?

Over time, yes. Debris holds water against the roof where it carries the most flow, which speeds up wear and moss growth.

Can I just blow it off from a ladder?

Valleys are usually out of reach from a ladder, and working on a wet roof is risky. It's a job worth leaving to someone with fall protection.
