Eagle Harbour gutters on a forested lot

This story describes a typical situation we see in West Vancouver, not one specific customer.
The situation
A home above Eagle Harbour sits on a lot full of mature cedars and firs. The owner had the gutters cleaned every fall, but by spring there were seedlings growing out of the back gutter and the downspout by the garage was gurgling and overflowing.
One clean a year clearly wasn't keeping up.
What forest lots do to gutters
Cedar fronds, fir needles and cones fall all year, and windstorms bring down a fresh load in a single night. In a gutter, that debris breaks down into a rich, wet mix that seeds and moss happily grow in.
Downspouts at inside corners and near the garage often take the most debris, because two roof slopes drain into them.
How we approach it
- Gutters are cleared by hand, including any plant growth and the compacted layer at the bottom.
- Downspouts are flushed and checked. If one connects to an underground drain that's blocked, we'll point it out for a drainage contractor.
- We look at the roof edge and valleys above each gutter for moss, since it feeds the same problem.
A schedule that keeps up
On lots like this, a fall clean after the leaves and a spring clean after the winter storms is usually enough to stop overflow. Some owners under very large trees add a mid-summer check.

Why are plants growing in my gutters?
Composted debris in a gutter holds water and nutrients, which makes it a perfect seedbed. Regular cleaning stops it.
Do you remove the debris?
Yes. Debris is bagged and hauled away by default, or left at your compost where it's accessible if you'd rather keep it.
