The situation
A home along Dollarton faces the water, with floor-to-ceiling windows on the main floor and a glass-railed balcony upstairs. Within a few months of the last clean, the glass had a grey film, the balcony railing was spotted and the window frames had a gritty layer.
The owners wanted to know whether more frequent cleaning was actually worth it.
Living with salt air
Wind off the water carries fine spray and grime that dries on the glass. When it rains, the film softens and redeposits as spots.
Frames, tracks and railings collect the same grit, which can make sliding doors stiff and leave marks on metal over time.
How we approach it
- Exterior glass is scrubbed and rinsed with purified water, which dries without leaving minerals behind. Frames and sills are cleaned at the same time.
- The big main-floor windows and the balcony railing are finished by hand for a crisp result. Door and window tracks can be vacuumed and wiped as an add-on.
- Any stubborn spots are tested. If they're etched into the glass, cleaning won't remove them, and we'll tell you rather than scrub harder.
Is a more frequent schedule worth it?
For waterfront homes, usually yes. Glass cleaned regularly comes clean faster and builds up less film between visits. A clean every few months during the drier seasons often works well for waterfront glass; we'll suggest a schedule once we've seen how quickly yours gets dirty.
